Engineering & Design

Every project at RAFA starts with translating requirements, regulations, and design intent into feasible and safe glazing solutions. Based on specifications and functional requirements, we analyse all relevant parameters, including strength, weight, optical quality, acoustic and solar performance, safety, and aesthetics.

During the engineering phase, we develop the glazing concept, including detailed strength calculations. Where required, we also design aluminium window frames, treating glass, frames, and bonding as one integrated system.

Close coordination with classification societies such as Lloyd’s Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, and DNV ensures compliance from the outset.

Verification & Testing

Prior to production, RAFA verifies the design in practice. This step is essential to ensure that the engineered solution performs as intended onboard. Using advanced 3D measurement techniques, we verify dimensions, tolerances, and interfaces with the hull or superstructure.

The objective of this verification is to prevent issues in later project stages. Even minor deviations in fit or tolerances can have significant consequences during installation and sealing. By identifying and controlling these risks at an early stage, the project remains predictable and under control.

This phase forms the critical link between engineering and production. Only once fit and manufacturability are fully validated is the glazing released for production. This ensures that the final result is not only correct in theory, but also fully executable in practice.

Production Supervision & Inspection

Glazing production is carried out in accordance with the high standards of the maritime sector and under the direction of RAFA. We actively supervise this process, ensuring that each panel is manufactured in full compliance with the approved design and specifications.

During and after production, inspections are performed panel by panel, often in the presence of the shipyard or class surveyor. Parameters such as tolerances, optical quality, finishing, and dimensions are thoroughly verified. These inspections form a critical part of quality assurance and ensure that the glazing can be installed without unexpected issues.

By actively managing both production and inspection, we take full responsibility for the final product. This prevents discussions at the yard and builds confidence among all stakeholders involved.

Installation & Sealing

Installation onboard is one of RAFA’s core specialisations. EAB-certified specialists carry out the structural bonding and sealing of the glazing in accordance with certified procedures and class requirements. This work requires a high level of precision, experience, and craftsmanship, both technically and visually.

We carefully coordinate installation with other onboard disciplines, including painting, interior construction, and deck finishing. The glazing is precisely aligned, flush-mounted, and delivered to the highest standard. Sealing plays a critical role in the final result, not only functionally, but also in defining the overall visual quality.

It is in this phase that the quality of the entire process becomes visible. Through thorough preparation and precise execution, we deliver a final result that meets the highest standards in safety, appearance, and durability.

Service & Aftercare

RAFA remains involved even after delivery. Service, warranty handling, and any required replacements are carried out quickly and efficiently, often on location where the vessel is operating. This is particularly important for international projects and vessels that must remain operational.

We understand that downtime is costly and that issues must be resolved without delay. Thanks to our in-depth knowledge of the entire process; from design to installation, we act efficiently and provide targeted solutions.

This continued involvement after delivery forms the foundation for long-term partnerships.

Certification as an integral part

Certification and class approval are fully embedded in the RAFA Shipwindows & Marine glass process. From the very first design phase, all work is carried out in accordance with applicable standards, guidelines, and class requirements relevant to the project and its operating area. This ensures that the complete glazing system demonstrably complies with all required certifications.

With extensive experience in managing certification processes and coordinating with classification societies such as Lloyd’s Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, and DNV, potential risks are identified and controlled at an early stage. This prevents delays and discussions in later project phases. Design, calculations, material selection, and installation methods are therefore fully aligned and consistently substantiated.

Certification remains a constant throughout production, inspection, and installation. Established procedures and rigorous quality controls are designed to ensure compliance, safety, and optimal performance throughout each phase.
